Hello, all. Recently, I've received a few questions about what products I use on my skin and any other skin care tips I have to offer. These questions came as a surprise to me, as I've spent the last couple years myself struggling to find things that keep my skin happy. While it's still by no means perfect (I do experience break outs every so often, but have a super effective way to fight them off fast!), I'm relieved to say I've finally found products and techniques that are keeping my face the most clear, clean and satisfied it's ever been. I'm more than happy to share what I've learned through the years of trying to perfect my own skin care routine!
I'll start by saying that everything I use on my skin is 100% natural. And I do not use any "high-end" brand lotions, scrubs or acne solutions to keep my complexion clear and smooth. Our skin is important, like, the biggest organ that we have important. It protects us from outside variables that would otherwise harm our bodies, so it's only fair that we treat it nicely in return. Our skin deserves to be nourished, taken care of and occasionally pampered. The nicest thing we could do for our skin and ourselves is avoid using highly medicated, unnatural or harmful remedies on it!
A little back story
After a hardcore battle with acne throughout most of high school, I started to truthfully just get sick of my skin's imperfections. I tried everything from Pro-Active to birth control pills to a medicated face wash and even acne pills taken internally! My skin was not having any of it. My face would become red, irritated, itchy and dry, without ever seeing improvements on complexion or balance. I was tired of the failed attempts of medications prescribed by dermatologists, and as much as it was appreciated, I couldn't stand to hear my mom say "you're beautiful no matter what" one more time. Mostly, I was tired of the smell of medicated lotions and the harsh and unnecessary side effects they had on my skin. I decided to ixnay the dermatology route and dive into a more natural skin care path.
Fast forward a couple years, endless research and some trial and errors later, I finally have a skin care routine that only requires healthy, natural products and keeps my face feeling clean, vibrant and happy! So here is exactly what I use and how I use it!
Products Used Daily
Ocean salt face wash
More coconut oil
Tea tree oil
1. Remove any Makeup
First thing's first, if there's one piece of makeup I wear (almost) daily, it's mascara. I admit, I'm a lash junkie! So, I always have to remove the makeup before diving into the rest of my routine. To do this, I typically just use coconut oil on a cotton ball.
If you know me, you know I'm a HUGE fan of coconut oil. It's featured heavily not only in my skin care routine, but life in general. There are endless benefits to using coconut oil on your skin, ranging from nutrients and moisturizer to simply the smell (you can read more about these here), however, if you're looking for a coconut-less option you could remove makeup with almost any kind of oil- olive, almond, jojoba, etc.
Make your own makeup removing mixture by using a chosen oil combined with witch hazel. (3 tablespoons witch hazel and 2 tablespoons oil usually does the trick). Scoop into a mini mason jar for future use!
After removing my makeup, it's time to clean! This is my favorite part, because I get to use my most favorite skin care product of all time
Ocean Salt by Lush- ($21.95) This cleanser is made of all natural and fresh ingredients including sea salt, grapefruit, lime extract, avocado butter, coconut and lime oils, and seaweed! The coarse sea salt makes this scrub a perfect exfoliator, removing any dead skin or dirt while the oils and avocado butter leave my face feeling soft and smooth. The lime helps to brighten my skin tone and overall, it leaves me with a sweet, citrusy scent. I feel brand new every time I wash with this scrub!
DIY- If you're the crafty type, you might make your own face scrub! I've done this a few times. It's as easy as combining Sea or Himalayan Salt with some coconut oil and storing it in a mason jar. Get creative by adding things such as avocado, essential oils or honey!
I am all about keeping things simple. I don't like spending more than 10 minutes on my overall skincare and beauty regimens before bed. That's why I was so pumped to find something as simple as a jar of coconut oil to keep in the bathroom for my face and body moisturizer. I wasn't kidding when I said coconut oil is my #1 go-to here! You could find coconut oil at almost any grocery store. I use a Trader Joe's brand that costs about $6. The best part? Because you only need a small amount for each use, investing in one jar of coconut oil can last you months!
To use as facial moisturizer- scoop a tiny amount onto your finger, rub between your hands to melt a little and apply it to the dry areas on your face (I apply it to my entire face, giving a little extra love to my forehead and around my eyes). Believe it or not, using coconut oil as my daily moisturizer has significantly helped to clear my skin of acne and blemishes. It's also shown improvements in the dark circles I tend to collect under my eyes.
Use the same process to moisturize your legs, feet, arms, or anywhere your skin needs some nourishing love.
Looking for a non-coconut oil option to moisturize? Try using honey! Mixing 2 tablespoons of raw, organic honey with about 8 tablespoons of water will create a delightful paste that will soften your skin, fight blemishes and leave you with a lovely afterglow!
For breakouts or blemishes, which I do still experience occasionally, I use Melaleuca (aka Tea Tree Oil ($19)). This oil has been proven to be an awesome technique in speeding up the healing of breakouts when used as a spot treatment. I can vouch for this, as it's been working for me for years!
To use- apply a couple drops of Tea Tree Oil to your finger or a q-tip and dab onto the problem spots. Be sure to only use this as a spot treatment for pimples or blemishes, as it is a strong essential oil and could cause skin irritation if over-used! I normally only use Tea Tree Oil at night before bed, and avoid using it multiple days in a row so that it doesn't completely dry out my skin. Since such a tiny amount is necessary for a blemish, one bottle of this should last you a couple of months, at least!
If you have more sensitive skin, you may consider diluting the Tea Tree Oil with fractionated coconut oil, although it is perfectly safe to apply without diution.

So, this sums up the 3 easy steps to my daily skin care routine! I hope you guys find it beneficial. I truly believe that switching to only natural products on my skin is what helped transform it from cranky and irritated to clear and happy. And while I believe a natural skincare routine is the best decision we could make, please remember that everybody's skin is different. What works for one person may not work for another, or might be magic! Play around and see what makes you feel the best. I only wish I found these natural products and remedies back in high school, I would've saved myself a lot of time, grief, and money! If you try any of these tips or products, I would love to chat and hear the outcome- comment below! I'll also keep this post updated with any added or new products I come across that make my skin as happy as the rest of these do.
Sending all love,
