If you haven't noticed, I've been on a green kick recently! Since paying more attention to how my actions affect the planet and it's inhabitants, I've made a bunch of small changes throughout my daily life that make my routines kind to all beings, able to help leave a softer footprint, and are oh-so easy to maintain. I have noticed such a positive difference in how I feel each day knowing that I'm doing my part to help animals and humans alike. So far, I've covered some cruelty-free beauty products and some tips to make your home space more green. So what's missing, you ask? One more thing all of us, well, most of us, do every day. For those of you following along this conscious living journey with me (woohoo!), the second part in this Earth-loving sequence covers everything you need to know in order to keep your showers both cruelty-free AND eco-friendly!
Note- You'll hear me describe things as "green" often. This simply means it's as eco-friendly as possible. :)
My Favorite Cruelty-free shower brands
First thing's first - here's a list of my favorite cruelty-free bath & body brands-
You may know about my love for Ocean Salt face/body scrub from my post about cruelty-free beauty brands, BUT there are so many other shower products to love from this brand.- from shampoo/conditioner, body washes, lotions & even face and hair masks. Stop by and check out their delicious smelling shower gels- most are around just $10! Find products online or in select malls.
From ginger, to bananas and strawberries, the Body Shop is inspired by nature, never tested on animals and have been super nourishing for my hair. Find their products online, in select Ulta stores or malls.
Pixie Beauty //
I use coconut oil to remove my eye makeup at the end of the day (you can read more about my daily, all natural skincare routine here). However, if I'm traveling or just out for the night, I carry Pixi Makeup Melting Cleansing Cloths. Super moisturizing, natural and cruelty-free! Definitely check out their glow tonic while you're here (heart eyes)! Available online or at Target stores.
Cruelty-free Drug store Brands
While it's not easy to find cruelty-free shower gel/shampoo brands at drugstores, it's not impossible! Here's a few you can find at CVS, Walgreens & Target-
Not Your Mothers
The Honest Company
Tom's of Maine
Kiss My Face
Love Beauty & Planet
Popular Bath & Body Brands that are NOT Cruelty-free
Unfortunately, there are still many shower brands who have not joined the movement to fight against animal testing. I realize that some of these brands are widely and loyally used, but remember that there's an animal-friendly replacement for any/every product you can think of!
Note- I will always keep these posts updated as/if any of these brands take the pledge to become cruelty-free. As of now, the following are on my do not buy list-
Clean & Clear
--> Replace these brands with products by Lush, Love Beauty & Planet, Pacifica, & Yes To!
Hair care //
-->Replace these brands with Paul Mitchell, Jason, Not Your Mothers, Lush, The Body Shop, and more!
Oral Care //
-->These could all be replaced with Tom's of Maine products (which I highly recommend!)
Now I've found my favorite cruelty-free shower products, but how do I Go Green!?
That's a mighty fine question, wellness warriors! To make our showers TRULY cruelty-free, it requires being mindful of using products not tested on our animal friends, but also limiting the affect they have on our planet. There are a few simple changes you could make to your shower routine to make them more sustainable-
Invest in a reusable razor
Disposable razors are so messy. Once they're thrown away, they pile up in landfills and giant amounts of plastic are collected, not degrading, until they end up in our natural environments posing dangers to our wildlife. Prevent this outcome by switching over to a razor that you can simply replace the head of. These are pretty easy to find just about anywhere, but Pacifica offers one you could purchase right online. While you're there, check out the awesome Shave Whips and think about replacing your current shaving cream with a cruelty-free one!
Save water- switch to a higher efficiency shower head
Did you know that standard shower heads use an average of 2.5 gallons per minute? This could be cut in HALF by switching to a high efficiency shower head. Many of the newer models of these shower heads do not require a change in water pressure (phew), so you can still enjoy your shower the same way it was before, but feel good knowing it's better for the environment!
Bonus- The use of a higher efficiency shower head will reduce your heating bill. Think about it, the less water you're using, the less water needs to be heated!
Duh! Make your showers more sustainable by inviting your significant other in to join you. This tactic is not only fun (or even romantic), but a great way to save more water and energy from your heating bill. Ladies, this is also the perfect opportunity to ask your man to wash your hair and enjoy that head massage, mmm.
Use your bath towels more than once
Why pile up the laundry faster by using a new towel every time you shower? Save water, energy and even some of your own time (I hate doing laundry lol) by hanging your towel up to dry after you shower so that it's able to be used twice, maybe even three times.
Invest in eco-friendly cleaning products
Brands like Method are committed to lowering carbon emissions from their products and manufacturing practices. Let's support these companies by using their products!
Note- Method products are also the safest cleaning products to use around pets. And as always, cruelty-free.
You could even get creative here and make your OWN cleaning products. Have white vinegar on hand? Grab your DöTerra Lemon essential oil and combine the two in a spray bottle to create an efficient spray that both cleans and leaves the area smelling like lemon heaven!
I truly believe that in helping to keep our beautiful planet clean, we are nourishing our own souls. Making conscious decisions as a consumer will benefit you, me & everybody in between.
