I don’t know about you, but I come from a background of extravagantly decorated trees and presents piled up to the tippy top. Fun wrapping paper, sparkles, bows, and hefty piles of recycling on Christmas morning (insert nervous smile here).
I adore the memories I have under the Christmas tree growing up, but as a lot of you already know, over the last couple months, I’ve been transitioning into a more minimalist lifestyle. And LOVING it. You can read more about the transition here, but today I want to talk about how I’m keeping my holiday season both merry and minimalist!
I love getting into the holiday spirit, but the clutter that typically comes along with it? Not so much. In these last two years, I’ve discovered sooo many ways to light up the holiday spirit without seasonally themed dish towels or random knick knacks strewn about. Don’t get me wrong— if that’s your jam, own it! But if you’re interested in keeping your holidays happily low-key (and saving some moolah on decorations), read on!
Here are three ways your minimalist chica is gettin’ festive this season—
1. Sustainable “home decor”- gimmie all those fireside candles and eucalyptus arrangements! Instead of wasting money and precious apartment storage space on seasonal decor from Target (once upon a time, I’d go NUTS here), I’m creating a cozy holiday home with different scents and of course, plants. I have also been loooooving my peppermint and wintergreen essential oils from döTERRA in my Lumo diffuser :) This baby’s serene, atmospheric lighting sets the perfect holiday tone.
2. Gifts of experience- no spoiler alerts (sorry, fam! hehe) BUT this year, I’m focusing more on the time spent with loved ones, rather than finding the “perfect gift.” In fact, I’m trying to minimize the physical objects I buy as much as possible! Tickets to a comedy show, a museum trip, or little weekend adventures together are just a few examples of gifts that won’t take up space in your home, but will totally fill your heart.
3. Good tunes and baking- nothing quite says holiday spirit like classic Christmas jams and the smell of freshly baked cookies, am I right? If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace in your house, snuggle up next to it to watch Elf (my personal favorite) while you wait for your cookies to bake!
Bonus— grab some cute and eco-friendly pastry boxes off amazon and gift some of your delicioso cookies to friends and fam!
I have loved finding more mindful ways to enjoy all of my fave holiday moments while keepin’ it simple & minimal. It’s easy to get caught up in Christmas present shopping or perfectly decorated homes, and hey, there’s no right or wrong way to celebrate the season, so do you! But let’s not forget what the holiday season is truly about— spreading the love and spending time with our dear ones.
Sending you alllll the warmest holiday wishes
